The canvas has been relined quite recently. The paint surface is generally sound with some heavy craquelure to the sky and areas of thin paint throughout. The thick surface impedes satisfactory inspection under ultra violet light but some scattered retouching to the sky are visible. Unfamed.

The composition derives, with some differences, from the original by Everdingen in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, inv. no. 480 (see Sylvia Ferino-Pagden et al., Die Gemäldegalerie des Kunsthistorischen Museums in Wien, Vienna, 1991, p. 524, cat. no. 480).
