Catalogue Note
Although originally attributed to Cima da Conegliano and dated to the 1490s by Colletti (see Literature; with wrong dimensions, 52.7 by 58.8 cm), the attribution was rejected by Peter Humfrey who regards it as 'fairly remote' from Cima's œuvre. Another version of this composition is listed by Heinemann as in the Fogg Art Museum, Cambridge (Mass.), as by Lattanzio da Rimini (see F. Heinemann, Giovanni Bellini e i Belliniani, Venice 1959, vol. I, p. 112, cat. no. S.162, reproduced vol. II, p. 278, plate 299). It is most likely that both of these panels relate to a lost design by Giovanni Bellini.
