Catalogue Note
A note on the provenance:
Sir Philip Antsiss Hendy (1900-1980) was the curator of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in the 1930s but he resigned in 1933 after the trustees voiced their disapproval of his purchase of Matisse's 1903 nude Carmelina. Next he was made director of Leeds City Art Gallery before succeeding Sir Kenneth Clark as Director of the National Gallery in London in 1946. He retired from the post in 1967.
