Catalogue Note
Village scenes such as this, in which a horse-drawn wagon or cart occupies the centre of the composition, were a favourite of Victors. Two very similar scenes are recorded by Sumowski (Gemälde der Rembrandt-Schüler, vol. IV, Landau/Pfalz 1983, pp.2613, 2615, nos. 1795 and 1806) in the Kunstmuseum, Basel (signed and dated 1652) and formerly with Galerie Sanct Lucas, Vienna. Like the latter painting, this work probably dates from the 1660s.
