Catalogue Note

Friedländer and Rosenberg (see Literature) date this picture to circa 1520 and mention several other versions of the composition, two of which are very similar and were respectively with the Lilienfeld Gallery, New York, in 1945, and in the Diocesan Museum Sandomierz, Poland, by 1957.  A third version, set in an interior, was sold in Cologne, Malmede and Geissendorfer, 14 November 1917.  Friedländer and Rosenberg compare the present work to another very similar painting of the Virgin and Child adored by St. John the Baptist, formerly in the Von Caffert collection, Daumenbüttel, near Gifhorn, Germany.
