  • An architectural capriccio with Christ driving the money-traders from the temple; An architectural capriccio with Christ healing the sick
  • a pair, both oil on canvas, oval

Provenance

Jessen collection, no. 11, as Panini (according to labels on the reverse).

Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. Both original canvases have been lined and the paint layers are stable, although slightly raised. The 'Money traders' has some minor paint losses visible and a pale filigree of shrinkage cracking through the figures at the bottom, some of which has been reduced. There is a little abrasion to the darker passages. The ' healing the sick' has fewer paint losses and less shrinkage craquelure but there is a little abrasion to the Christ figure and others. Both paintings have discoloured varnishes and there removal would improve the tonality. Overall, the paintings are in a good condition."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."

Catalogue Note

The architectural design of the latter clearly derives from that of Joli's Capriccio with Roman baths, one version of which is in Leeds, City Art Gallery, and another in Caserta, Palazzo Reale (for which see M. Manzelli, Antonio Joli: Opera pittorica, Venice 2000, pp. 125-6, cat. nos. C2 and C3, reproduced figs. 111 and 112).

We are grateful to Mr. Ralph Toledano for endorsing the attribution to Joli on the basis of transparencies.
