"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
The flat , well preserved copper panel is supported by a wooden tray. The paint layer is stable although slightly raised in the shadows of the Madonna's face and eyes. There is one visible restored paint loss to the knee of the Madonna and under U-V light small retouchings can be seen to Christ's body and the hair and profile of St. John. The remains of a patchy discoloured varnish is present in the background."

Catalogue Note
It is surprising that a painting of such high quality has yet to be convincingly attributed. The painter almost certainly worked in Rome in the early part of the 18th century and this copper shows the clear influence of Sebastiano Conca (1680-1764) and Francesco Trevisani (1656-1746), to whom this painting was once attributed.
