Condition
The photograph in the catalogue is over-exposed: the painting is slightly darker and the colours are deeper than they appear in the catalogue. The copper support is stable, the paint surface is not very dirty and the varnish layer is only slightly discoloured. Inspection under ultra-violet light reveals retouchings in the upper left, lower left and lower right corners; the latter of these spreading into a damage on Christ's right foot. Other scattered retouchings are visible throughout though these are localised and minor. The retouchings are not obvious to the naked eye although on close inspection many have slightly discoloured. The painting is in fairly good condition overall.
The elaborate gilt wood and plaster frame has been painted over with gold paint and has numerous chips and damages, especially at the corners and on the left and right edges.
