Catalogue Note

According to Roman mythology Jupiter fell in love with Europa, the daughter of the king of Tyre.  Disguised as a bull, he approached the fair maiden and she, tricked by his good nature, began to play with him and garland his horns.  As she climbed onto his back he rode into the sea and off to Crete where he ravished her.
