Description

  • Saint Francis of Assisi with the Dead Christ
  • the reverse inscribed in an old hand: Lud. Card./ Cigoli
and with inventory number 78 brushed on the reverse
  • oil on copper

Condition

The painting is slightly less red than the catalogue illustration but the colours are quite representative. The painting is on a copper support and has been recently cleaned, restored and varnished. No restoration is obvious to the naked eye and inspection under ultra-violet light reveals retouchings in the lower corners and other scattered retouchings but these are minor and localised. Older retouchings are apparent in the background, especially upper left and in an area to the right of St. Francis. There are a few very small scattered retouchings on Christ, the most significant being one measuring 3 by 3mm. on his right shoulder. A few retouchings on the white sheet are also apparent, probably applied to hide some thinness, but on the whole the painting is in good condition. The restoration has been sensitively carried out and is invisible to the naked eye: the painting can be hung as is. The modern black and gold Salvator Rosa-style wood frame is in good condition (except for a few minor knocks to give it the appearance of natural wear).
