Description

  • Portrait of a lady, three quarter length, in a black dress with lace trim and slashed sleeves, wearing a plumed hat and holding white gloves
  • oil on canvas, unframed

Condition

The actual painting is slightly softer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has a rather rigid relining, which has somewhat flattened the paint surface. Some minor scratches are visible to the upper left and right of the woman's face, as well as a few tiny surface scratches to the lower right. A few spots of paint loss, which have been retouched, can be observed in the woman's dress. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals retouches and strengthening throughout, e.g. in the woman's hands, in her dress, in the curtain, and in the sky to the background. A larger area of retouching in the upper left might relate an old restored tear, but otherwise, no major damages seem to be apparent. The painting seems to be recently cleaned and is under a clear and glossy layer of varnish. This lot is offered unframed.
