  • Saint Margaret of Antioch

Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The slate is in good condition with a surface that is smooth and stable. The background is discoloured and there are visible restorations here to blend the discolorations. The angels in the top corners have been augmented as has St. Margaret's cloak in the shadows where de-lamination of the paint has occurred; the de-lamination extends to the figure of the dragon and to the flesh tones of St. Margaret, also restored."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."

Catalogue Note

The Christian martyr saint Margaret of Antioch was reputedly tortured after having refused to marry the prefect of Antioch. She was thrown into prison where Satan appeared to her in the form of a dragon. She was said to have been devoured but the cross she held caused the dragon to burst, and she emerged unharmed. She is shown here with her attribute - the dragon - which she tramples underfoot.

The attribution is due to Mr. Terence Mullaly, to whom we are grateful, following first hand inspection.
