Description

  • Portrait of a sculptor, traditionally thought to be Jacopo Sansovino, half length and leaning on a parapet, holding a sculpted torso in his right hand
  • inscribed on the reverse of the canvas: Sansovinus sculptor venetus
brushed on reverse of the canvas with the old inventory number: 3990

Condition

The catalogue illustration is too red in tone. The canvas has a rather rigid relining, which has pressed the paint surface. The painting has been recently cleaned but is in only moderate condition. The paint surface has suffered from wear in many areas, allowing the distinctive canvas weave to show through clearly. The background has been liberally restored, as have all the shadwos in the draperies, the statue and the face. The varnish is shiny and even. This lot is offered unframed.

Catalogue Note

The fact that this painting is executed on a herring-bone canvas, normally found in the Veneto, would indicate that it was painted in or around Venice. The sculptor was traditionally believed to be Jacopo Sansovino, as the inscription on the reverse indicates.
