Condition
"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
The canvas is lined. Tears to the top edge, the background and the cape, right, have been consolidated. Two significant losses can be seen, one above the other, to the left of the sitter's head. Numerous small paint losses can be seen as well as abraded areas of paint , e.g. the sitter's face and the background."

Catalogue Note
There is a visible pentimento in the window area upper left: the artist originally intended there to be a vase of flowers and subsequently painted this out (though it is faintly visible through the landscape).
