"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The canvas is lined. The paint layer is stable although heavily abraded throughout . There is existence of old restoration masking this abrasion. Visible restorations to the sitter's neck. There is a discoloured and opaque varnish covering the background beneath which can be seen an abraded and compromised paint layer."
