Condition
"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
The original canvas is lined. Previous instability of the paint layer along the bottom edge has resulted in restoration. The surface is abraded and canvas weave and ground is visible in these areas, some augmentation has been carried out to reduce this e.g. the background behind the pike bearer, the flesh tones of the woman and Christ and the sky, upper left. The varnish is discoloured and degraded and does not saturate satisfactorily. Its removal will improve the tonality of the composition."
