There has been some minor loss to Christ's beard, retouched, and slight abrasion to the halo. The surface is covered in a discoloured varnish."

Catalogue Note

The attribution to Jacopo da Valenza is based on a comparison with other works by the artist, in particular with his signed painting of the Pietà in the Hessisches Landesmuseum, Darmstadt (reproduced in B. Berenson, Italian Pictures of the Renaissance. Venetian School, vol. I, London 1957, plate 356). Christ's physiognomy, the detailed depiction of His hair and schematic description of His torso are extremely similar in both works.
