Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The supports and paint surfaces of both are in a good condition . There are a small scattering of insignificant retouchings visible on both . The condition of both paintings is good."

Catalogue Note

Johann Careel (or Karell) was supposedly born in Holland, although no documentary evidence has survived to support this. Careel almost certainly used study drawings for his paintings as many of the flowers depicted reappear in his other works, such as the white tulip above the lizard which can also be seen in a Flower Still life sold New York, Christie's, 29 January 1998, lot 235.
