Condition
"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
The original canvas is lined. The lining has degraded leaving the paint layer raised and unstable. Minor paint losses visible in the sky upper and central left. Some of the darker passages, e.g. the foreground, have been compromised. There are discoloured retouchings in the hillside, upper left."

Catalogue Note
Although Adriaen van de Velde would normally paint the staffage for De Moucheron's landscapes, from 1676 onwards Van Huchtenburg is documented as a citizen of Amsterdam, where he must have known Frederik de Moucheron as they were both members of the Guild of St. Luke there. This work was evidently executed between this date and 1686, when De Moucheron died.
