Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The oak panel has a repaired and reinforced central join. The edges of the join have been planed before re-gluing causing a loss of continuity of drawing, this can be seen most particularly in the branches of the tree, left. The paint layer is stable . Thin paint in the sky, through which the pale ground can be seen, has been retouched and these retouchings have discoloured. Pale horizontal wood grain( some reduced) is visible. Mildly abraded darker areas e.g. roofs and the foreground. The removal of the discoloured varnish would improve overall tonality."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."

A very similar view of Rhenen, taken from almost the same spot, was formerly in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, and sold Amsterdam, Sotheby's, 8 May 2007, lot 52, for E72,000.
