Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The painting is lined, this lining is old and degraded. The stretcher is a retaining stretcher and the canvas has lost tension. Presence of stretcher marks along which the paint is unstable. There is a repaired tear upper right and to the sitter's sternum. The paint layer is abraded and has been augmented by restoration. There is obvious abrasion to the sitter's face , particularly noticeable in the face and beard. The varnish is discoloured."
