Condition
"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
The canvas is lined. The paint surface is slightly raised in some areas but this is stable. There are some old paint losses in the upper background. These have been filled and restored but are proud of the paint surface and are discoloured. Some thinness to the paint layer can be seen in the amorous gentleman's coat.
There is some restored paint loss along the bottom edge of the painting. The paint surface has a slightly discoloured varnish applied."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."

Catalogue Note
Although it is unknown whether Verschuring and the Haarlem painter Philips Wouwerman ever knew each other, Verschuring's horse and battle scenes are clearly influenced by those of his contemporary. In the 1660s Wouwerman painted various stable interiors, which Verschuring must have known; see, for example, Wouwerman's Stable Interior with a Grey horse, painted after 1665, in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.1
