"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The oak panel is in good condition apart from an aged canvas reinforcement of the central joint. The paint surface is in a good condition beneath a very discoloured varnish . There is evidence of some thinness of the paint layer beneath the varnish in the sitter's jacket and raised wood grain, which has been 'topped', in other areas."
