Description

  • Jan Brueghel the Elder
  • The last judgement
  • dated lower left: 1607
  • oil on copper, in a carved and gilt wood frame, the reverse marked with the brand of the Antwerp coppersmith Peeter Stas (circa 1565-after 1616)

Provenance

Believed by the present owner to have been in his family for many generations.

Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The copper panel is in good condition. The paint surface is generally sound with the exception of some small areas needing consolidating. Some small paint loss and abrasion has been retouched out, notably to the mid right and lower areas. The removal of the discoloured varnish will improve tonality.
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."

Catalogue Note

Painted in 1607, this small copper is a very early studio version of Jan Brueghel the Elder's Last Judgement of 1601, which was formerly with Pieter de Boer, Amsterdam, in 1961.1

The copper mark of Peeter Stas on the verso of this work ties in with the date inscribed on the recto. A similar mark can be found on another work by Jan Brueghel, dated circa 1607-9, in the Saint Louis Art Museum.2
