"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The original canvas is lined. The paint layer is mostly sound with some unstable paint in the centre. The paint surface has been vulnerable in the past leading to flaking paint loss. Under U-V light the presence of retouching to mask this can be seen in the sky, where it is quite significant, to the dark foliage right and left and in the foreground amongst the throng of people. There is an old discoloured and opaque varnish in the foliage and elsewhere across the surface."
