Condition
"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
Both original canvases are lined . The paint layer on both is raised and unstable.
Christian officer with pistol- There are visible raised stretcher marks and blanched retouchings to the sky. The left hand edge has been augmented. There is a pale filigree of shrinkage cracks to the darker passages e.g. the two central horses and some of the shadows in the foreground.
Turk with spear- This painting has experienced a greater amount of retouching which has discoloured and can be seen in the sky. A 1cm strip along the bottom edge has been restored. Similarly , it has a filigree of pale craquelure in the darker passages. The varnishes on both paintings have discoloured, their removal would improve the tonality.
In Neo-classical carved wood frames."

Catalogue Note
Lembke was active in Sweden, and doubtless Sparre acquired these locally.
