Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Hamish Dewar, an independent restorer, address: 14 Mason's Yard, Duke Street, St James's, London SW1Y 6BU, tel: +44 (0)20 7930 4004, fax: +44 (0)20 7930 4100, email: hamish@hamishdewar.co.uk. UNCONDITIONAL AND WITHOUT PREJUDICE Structural Condition The canvas has a completely recent lining which is ensuring a sound and secure structural support. Paint Surface The paint surface has a rather patchy and uneven varnish layer and revarnishing would certainly be beneficial. A number of retouchings are visible under ultra-violet light, the most signficant of which are: 1) extensive retouchings around the framing edges, 2) a vertical area, presumably covering a loss or tear, which measures approximately 32 x 3 cms through the draperies over the right leg of St. Catherine, 3) a number of fine lines filling craquelure in the pale pigment of the dress of St. Catherine. There are other retouchings scattered across the paint surface. Summary The paint surface is therefore in stable condition, requiring only revarnishing, having been quite extensively retouched in the past."
