Catalogue Note
The attribution to Pier Francesco Piola was first proposed by Dr. Mary Newcome Schleier at the 1999 sale (see Provenance) on the basis of a photograph and transparency. He is a rare artist whose only known altarpiece, the Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine, is in the church of Monte Olivero, Pegli. His style, and in particular this picture, demonstrates the influence of Luca Cambiaso.
