Jan Wijnants Haarlem (?) circa 1635 - 1684 Amsterdam
bidding is closed
Description
- Jan Wijnants
- A landscape with peasants conversing on a countryside path
- signed and dated lower right: J. Wijnants / 1667
- oil on canvas
Provenance
In the family collection of the present owner since the early twentieth century.
Condition
The catalogue illustration is representative, except in the right hand sky which is a little too cold in tone.
The canvas has been quite recently relined and the relining is sound. The painting has been quite recently restored and the paint surface is in good condition for the mostpart, although somewhat worn in the sky, notably at the right. There is a small restored T-shaped tear to the right of the three trees (2 by 2 cm). Inspection under ultra-violet light reveals a few small retouchings to the sky upper left and some strengthening to the foreground and, possibly, to the figures, although the patchy varnish renders more detailed analysis difficult. Old remnants of the old varnish are retained. This painting is in good overall condition, but is a little worn in the sky.
Sold with a modern gilt wood frame, in fairly good condition but with some losses.
