Abraham Jansz. Begeyn Leiden 1637/8 - 1697 Berlin

The catalogue illustration is representative but slightly too red in tone. The painting has fairly recently been relined, cleaned restored. The paint surface is overall in very good condition, with no major damages and no apparent sign of wear. Inspection under ultra-violet light reveals only scattered local retouchings in the background shadows lower left, to an area of repair just below the higher of the two butterflies on the left hand side, and to the left hand stem of the thistle upper left, and to the extreme margins. The central moth is a little worn, but the majority appears to be very well preserved indeed. The varnish layer remains clear and even and the painting will probably not require any further attention. This lot is offered with a modern stained wood frame with gilt sight edge in very good condition.
