Description
- Nicolaes Maes

- oil on canvas

Thence by desent to Sir Charles Lamb.
Thence by desent to Sir Charles Lamb.
Condition
The catalogue illustration is a little too pale in tone.
The canvas has been quite recently relined and the relining is sound. The paint surface is well preserved but there are patches of old restoration throughout and it is covered by an old varnish which should perhaps be replaced. There are two localised areas of concentrated small losses, one to the red cloth on his right should and the other on the red cloth around his hand. There is some minor repair to old stretcher marks at the upper and lower horizontal margins. Inspection under ultra-violet light reveals some strengthening to the background, centre left and centre right, and further minor strengthenings throughout. In general the painting survives in very good condition but would benefit from a light clean.
Sold with a 20th century gilt wood frame, in fair condition with some losses.
