The catalogue illustration is a little too yellow in tone. The support consists of three vertical flat panels. One join is supported by a series of batens and the other by a series of dovetails. The panels are uncradled and bevelled along all four edges. The paint surface is in fairly good condition overall but there are some localised areas of wear and subsequent restoration. The panel joins are visible from the front and there is some restored paint loss and retouching along these joins. There is some old restoration on the sitter's forehead and right cheek. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals some retouching along the bridge of the nose and underneath each eye and numerous scattered spot retouchings to the black clothing. There is also some old restoration on her right hand and scattered retouchings throughout. The lot is offered in a nineteenth-century gilt wood frame. AF
