The actual painting is softer and slightly more red in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has a stable relining. One vertical crease of approximately 25 cm., possibly an old tear, can be seen in the centre running up from the lower edge. Another smaller horizontal crease, which has been retouched, can be seen running from left to right, just below the upper edge. One small repaired damage can be observed along the left edge in the centre. The paint surface has grown thin, mainly in the darker areas, e.g. in the background, in the sky through the windows, in the foreground. Discoloured retouchings can be seen throughout, e.g. in the background, centre and upper right, in the patient's and the boy's costumes. The paint surface is under a fine craquelure pattern and covered with a thick and glossy layer of varnish. Inspection under ultra violet light confirms the aforesaid retouchings and reveals additional retouchings throughout, e.g. in the corner lower right, in the chair, in the doctor's costume, and in the pots to the right. Offered in a plain wood frame, with tiny pinholes. (MW)
