Cornelis Johannes Schaalje The Hague 1748 - 1807 Leiden

bidding is closed

Description

  • Cornelis Johannes Schaalje
  • a still life with white and blue grapes, peaches, a pumpkin and a walnut, all on a wooden ledge
  • signed and dated lower right: C s J s Schaalje f/ 1804
  • oil on panel

Provenance

With Kunsthandel Leffelaar, Haarlem (according to a label on the reverse).

Condition

The actual painting is more subdued in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single panel is lightly bevelled on all but the upper side. A vertical crack of approximately 15 cm. is visible in the centre. The paint surface has grown slightly thin in the background and in the pink flower, but otherwise the paint surface seems to be in good condition. A few minor retouches can be observed in the blue grapes in the foreground, and in the flowers to the upper right. The paint surface is under a clear layer of varnish. There's a fine layer of surface dirt. Inspection under ultra violet light confirms the aforesaid retouches, but reveals no further retouching. Offered in a wood plaster wood frame, with a few losses in along the edges and in the corners. (MW)
