Description
- Johan Baptist Govaerts
- a still life with blue and white grapes on a vine, peaches, a daisy, auriculas and a bird's nest, all on a wooden ledge, together with a butterfly
- signed with initials lower left: I.B.G.
- oil on canvas
Provenance
Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 6 July 2005, lot 113.
Condition
The actual painting is softer and less blue in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has a stiff relining, which has flattened the surface. However, the painting seems to be in good condition. A few retouchings, probably relating older paint losses, and some minor strengthening can be seen, e.g. in the upper background, in the leaves to the lower left, in the grapes to the right, and in the stone ledge. The painting is under a clear layer of varnish and seems to be recently cleaned. Inspection under ultra violet light confirms the retouchings as mentioned above, and reveals additional tiny retouchings and strengthening throughout, e.g. along the edges, in the grapes on the foreground, and in the butterfly. Offered in a decorative wood and parcel-gilt frame, in fair condition. (MW)
