Description

  • Hieronymus van der Mij
  • a woman in a barn interior with cabbages and carrots
  • bears a Gerard Dou signature and 1659 date lower left
  • oil on panel

Condition

The actual painting is softer in tone and is less shiny than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single panel is bevelled on all sides. A surface crack is visible in the upper right corner and is retouched. A retouched paint loss is visible in the woman's face as well as strengthening along her left arm. The background has grown somewhat thin, but details of the drapery's folds and vegetables are well preserved. The paint surface is covered under a dirty and discoloured varnish layer. Altough the varnish layer mostly fluoresces under UV-light, abovementioned retouchings are confirmed and reveals an additional one at the pot outer right. Offered in a very ornate, gilt wood frame which is in good condition. (JD)
