Circle of Frans Hals
bidding is closed
Description
- Frans Hals
- a young girl sitting at a table, holding a beer mug
- bears monogram lower right
- oil on panel, unframed
Condition
The actual painting is softer and a bit more yellow in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single panel is bevelled along the left edge. The paint surface is somewhat thin, especially in the dark-brown hues of the girl's costume. The hand appears to have been somewhat retouched. Minor paint losses are visible along all edges. Otherwise the paint surface is in good condition and the distinctive handling of the paint is nicely preserved. The paint surface is under a dirty and yellowed varnish layer.
The varnish layer fluoresces under UV-light , but strengthening of the monogram becomes apparent. Offered unframed. (JD)

Catalogue Note
This picture belongs to the circle of Frans Hals in Haarlem, and is close in style and spirit to works by Judith Leyster and her husband Jan Miense Molenaer. Both artists liked to depict children, presumably often their own, in comical circumstances, with mocking or moralizing intent. Both Dirck and Harmen Hals too painted pictures of this sort. In style, this work is perhaps closest to Jan Miense Molenaer and Harmen Hals, since it lacks the fluidity of Judith Leyster's brushwork, and only a handful of Dirck Hals' large output approach it in style.
