Description

  • Aert van der Neer
  • A moonlit river landscape with a village burning in the background
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The actual painting is a bit darker and subdued than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has a firm relining (glue). The painting is somewhat flattened, but some of the impasto brushstrokes, especially in the fire are well preserved. Small discoloured retouchings are visible to the naked eye in the sky and in the water. The paint surface is covered under a dirty and discoloured varnish layer. Inspection under UV-light is partially impeded by the varnish, however it confirms abovementioned retouchings and reveals additional retouchings and strengthening in the village and ships in the background.Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame, in fair condition.
