Manner of Adriaen Pietersz. van de Venne
bidding is closed
Description
- Adriaen Pietersz. van de Venne
- a winter landscape with elegant figures conversing on a path and skating on the ice, a fortified town beyond
- oil on panel
Provenance
With Bernard Houthakker, Amsterdam (according to a label to the reverse).
Condition
The actual painting is a lot more yellow in tone and has less contrast in the darker colours than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single piece of panel is flat and stable, and bevelled on all sides. Some small dents in the sky, upper centre and upper right, and in the tree trunk most left have been retouched somewhat crudely. More small retouching and strengthening is visible in the group of trees on the left. The paint surface has grown slightly thin in places, e.g. in the figures, particularly the falling figure in the centre, and is covered with a dirty layer of varnish. Inspection under ultra violet light is partially obscured by the thick varnish layer, but does confirm the retouchings as mentioned above, and reveals additional scattered retouchings in the sky. Offered in a decorative carved and gilt wood frame in good condition. (MW)
