By Jacques Philippe Le Bas, 1793 (as by Bartholomeus Breenbergh, see Literature, p. 111, no. 374, reproduced fig. 374.

Condition

The actual painting is slightly warmer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single panel is slightly warped to the top and is unbevelled. The paint surface is in good condition, but some tiny spots of retouched paint loss are visible along the edges. The varnish is slightly glossy, and dirty. Inspection under UV-light is partially impeded by the varnish layer, but some minor retouchings become apparent in the sky. The varnish layer seems to be unevenly cleaned. Offered in a black cabinet-style wood frame, in good condition. (JD)

Catalogue Note

Long considered to be by Bartholomeus Breenbergh, this work was rightly attributed to Warnard van Rijsen by Raupp in 2001 (see Literature). It was sold in these Rooms, 5 November 2002, lot 141, as was another work by the same artist (lot 142). Both works belonged to the Duc de Praslin, Paris, where they were mysteriously entitled Vue des environs de Lérida.
