Description

  • Gillis Mostaert
  • The road to Emmaus
  • oil on panel

Condition

The catalogue illustration is quite representative for the actual painting, though the actual painting is slightly more brown in tone. The panel seems to consist of one plank and is bevelled on the right and left side. It is slightly bowed. A horizontal crack of approximately 6 cm., which has been retouched, is visible to the background in the sky. Two thin horizontal cracks of similar size can be seen running from the right edge, as well as another small split running from the left edge. The paint surface has grown slightly thin throughout. However, the figures have been nicely preserved. A few discoloured retouchings can be observed in the sky, in the upper right corner in the group of trees, in the ground underneath the figures, and in the rocks in the lower centre. The painting is under a thick and glossy layer of varnish. Inspection under ultra violet light is partially impeded by the varnish layer, but does confirm the aforesaid retouchings, and reveals an additional spot of retouching in the upper left corner, as well as some minor strengthening to the foliage in the foreground. Offered in a simple fruit wood frame with a gilt fillet and gilt borders. (MW)

Catalogue Note

The figures in this landscape can be attributed to Gillis Mostaert, especially in the handling of the colours and their posture. The landscape however, would appear to be by another hand.
