Nicolaes Maes Dordrecht 1634 - 1693 Amsterdam

bidding is closed

Description

  • Nicolaes Maes
  • A portrait of a gentleman, wearing a gold coat, with a white chemise and a red bow, with a red cloak, in a painted oval
  • signed lower right: N M.es
  • oil on panel

Condition

The actual painting is softer in tone and shows more detail in the darker colours than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single panel is slightly bevelled on the upper, lower and left side. The panel is flat and stable. Two tiny spots of paint loss are visible in the centre along the left edge, as well as one tiny paint loss lower right. Small scattered discoloured retouchings, relating older paint losses, can be seen throughout, e.g. in the background just below the upper edge, along the right edge, in the figure's hair, in his collar and costume. The paint surface is under a thick and slightly dirty varnish layer. Inspection under ultra violet light confirms the aforesaid retouchings and reveals additional tiny scattered retouchings in the figure's face and in the red cloth. Offered in a decorative carved and gilt wood frame with a few small cracks, but otherwise in fair condition. (MW)
