DORDRECHT 1634 - 1693 AMSTERDAM
A PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN, HALF LENGTH, WEARING A BROWN COAT, WITH A WHITE SCARF, IN A PAINTED OVAL

Catalogue Note

According to a label on the reverse, the sitter can be identified as Frederik Ruysch (1638-1731), Praelector of Anatomy for the Surgeon's Guild in Amsterdam in 1666 and father of the female artist Rachel Ruysch (1664-1750). An almost identical portrait by Maes of the same sitter, also identified as Frederik Ruysch, was sold London, Christie's, 12 July 1985, lot 84A. However, comparing these two paintings with a painting by Juriaen Pool the Younger, husband of Ruysch's daughter Rachel, in the collection of Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam, the identification of the sitter as Ruysch cannot be asserted.
