After Bartholomeus van der Helst

bidding is closed

Description

  • Bartholomeus van der Helst
  • The celebration of the Peace of Münster, 18 June 1648, in the headquarters of the crossbowmen's civic guard (St. George Guard), Amsterdam
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The actual painting is warmer in tone and has slightly less contrast than the illustration in the catalogue suggests. The canvas has a rigid relining, but seems to be in good condition. A restored damage (tear?) of approximately 2 cm. is visible to the centre left, as well as another one to the upper left. There's minimal frame abrasion to the upper left corner. The paint surface is fairly flattened, due to the stiff relining. There is some surface dirt. Small scattered discoloured retouchings can be seen in the background. Inspection under ultra violet light is partly impeded by the thick varnish layer, but confirms the retouchings as mentioned above and reveals additional retouchings to the outer edges, particularly to the lower edge. Offered in a black ebonised wood frame. (MW/ML)
