Haarlem School, 17th Century

Description

  • A bagpipe and a violin player making music for peasants
  • remains of a signature lower right
  • oil on panel

Condition

The actual painting is a bit more brown in tone and has less contrast in the colours than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single panel is bevelled on all sides except for the top. Filled paintlosses and discoloured retouchings are visible to the naked eye, on the background wall and in two of the figures in the centre, as shown in the catalogue illustration. The paint surface is in good condition and the impastos of the brushstrokes are well preserved. The under drawing is also nicely visible to the right. The paint surface is covered under a thick and somewhat discoloured varnish layer, which is glossy. Inspection under UV-light is impeded by the varnish, but seems to confirm abovementioned restorations. Offered in a black painted frame, in good condition. (JD)
