Condition

The catalogue illustration is representative for the painting, though the actual painting is slightly less red in tone. The panel is cradled, and seems to consist of two planks joined horizontally. The paint surface has grown slightly thin in places, mainly in the background and the dress of the lady, but otherwise seems to be in good condition. The joint, which is visible to the front, has been retouched, and strengthening is visible throughout, e.g. in the barrel and the fish in the foreground, in the door on the left and in the roof. The painting is under a clear layer of varnish and seems to be recently cleaned. Inspection under ultra violet light confirms the aforesaid retouchings and reveals additional scattered retouchings and strengthening throughout, and reveals an old restored horizontal crack just below the upper edge. Offered in a black wood frame with a gilt fillet in good condition. (MW)
