The actual painting is less bright and has less contrast in the lighter tones than the illustration in the catalogue suggests. The canvas has a stiff relining (wax), which has flattened the paint surface somewhat, and has grown a bit dry. A small horizontal tear is visible to the lower edge. Some thinnes can be observed in places, mainly to the background and in the green tones. A horizontal dent running from the left to the right edge can be seen in the upper part. The paint surface is under a fine craquelure pattern, which varies in places. Discoloured retouchings relating to older paint losses and strenghtenings can be seen throughout, e.g. in the leafs to the centre left and centre right, in the brownish flowers to the lower right, to the background lower right, and along the edges. The paint surface is under a thick layer of varnish. Inspection under ultra violet light is obscured by the dirty layer of varnish, but does confirm the retouchings as mentioned above. There is probably some retouching and strengthening to the background and in the vase as well. Offered in a carved gilt wood frame.
