North Netherlandish School, late 16th Century

The actual painting is warmer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The panel consists of two planks that are joined vertically and is bevelled on all sides. The joint is clearly visible to the front and has been retouched, as shown in the catalogue illustration, as well as the panel's grain structure. A few scattered discoloured retouchings are visible to the naked eye in the blue drapery and in Christ's body. A pinpoint hole is visible in the lower centre, next to the joint as well as some scattered minor paint losses. The painting is covered under a fine layer of dirt and discoloured varnish layer that has run into the grains. Inspection under UV-light confirms abovementioned restorations and reveals additional retouchings throughout, e.g. along the joint and in the faces of the angel, the virgin Mary and in Christ's body. Offered in a plain black wood frame, in fair condition. (JD)
