Description

  • Joannes Fijt
  • A study of a reclining lioness
  • oil on panel, unframed

Condition

The actual painting is softer and less red in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The panel consists of two planks joined horizontally, as is visible to the front. The panel is bevelled on the upper, left and right sides, and is slightly bowed. Two small horizontal cracks of approximately 3 cm., which have been retouched, are visible along the lower right edge. A small chip of wood is missing in the lower right corner. Older paint losses to the background and along the upper and right edge have been somewhat crudely over painted, and also the joint has been retouched. In the upper left corner the paint surface has a tendency towards flaking and shows some bubbling in the surface. Some tiny paint losses and scratches are visible along the outer left and lower edge. On small repaired damage is visible lower right. The brushwork in the head and the fur of the lion, however, is beautifully preserved. The paint surface is under a thick and slightly glossy layer of varnish. Inspection under ultra violet light confirms the retouchings as mentioned above and reveals small additional retouchings in the fur on his back. Offered unframed. (MW)
