Catalogue Note

This still life appears to be by an as yet unidentified Roman painter who was active circa 1643.  The artist may well have been a member of the Stanchi family of painters in Rome, of whom we have knowledge of three:  Giovanni, Niccolo and Angelo, but of whom there may well have been more, and of whom some pictures are so far only identified as by "Stanchi", and not an identified family member.  In style this work is not far away from Giovanni Stanchi, the best-known member.  In some contemporary accounts their name is given as rendered as Stangi and also Stanghetta, so the spelling of the name was clearly not fixed.

Alternatively, the signature and date here may in fact be an early transcription, perhaps not fully understood of an inscription on the reverse of the original canvas, in which case Angelo Stanchi, whose first name is often rendered as Ang:, may perhaps be the author.
